One of my favorite songs growing up was the quintessential Celtic ballad “Scarborough Fair” On the top of my list, after moving to NYC in the early 2000’s, I ended up recording it with my ensemble featuring the medieval Bowed Psaltery which incurred the ancient mood and melody of my visions for this special tune.
Few folk songs are as beautiful and enduring as Scarborough Fair. With origins tracing back to medieval England, this ballad was traditionally sung as a dialogue between lovers, weaving together themes of longing, impossible tasks, and timeless romance.
During public performances of this haunting medieval song, the audience chuckles at my mysterious intro when I proclaim, “…and this one was not written by Simon & Garfunkel!”
During the Baroque era, there was no single international pitch standard and Vivaldi’s Baroque Tuning was usually between 415 and about 432 Hz.
When paired with the 432 Hz frequency, Scarborough Fair transforms from a haunting folk ballad into an even more meditative experience. Its modal melody naturally lends itself to spaciousness, while the tuning enhances its calming and ethereal qualities. While scientific debate continues, the experiential side is undeniable: music tuned to 432 Hz often carries a gentler, warmer quality that resonates deeply with the human ear and spirit.
Advocates of 432 Hz tuning describe it as more harmonious with nature. They point out that:
Some traditions connect 432 Hz to the Solfeggio frequencies, which are said to promote healing, relaxation, and a deeper state of meditation. Perhaps this is due to the fact 432 Hz mathematically aligns with patterns found in nature, the cosmos, and even the human body. Many listeners report feeling calmer, more grounded, and emotionally balanced when listening to music at this frequency. Although more scientific experiments are certainly required, I find the effect soothing, hence the renderings to 432Hz from the current global standard 440Hz for my recordings.
This combination allows the music to do more than entertain — it creates an atmosphere of stillness, reflection, and inner peace. Whether you are meditating, studying, or simply seeking a moment of calm, Scarborough Fair in 432 Hz offers a timeless journey inward.
